Children in detention armed conflict12/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() No matter their involvement, the recruitment and use of children by armed forces is a grave violation of child rights and international humanitarian law. Still others associate themselves for survival or to protect their communities. Others are driven by poverty, compelled to generate income for their families. This includes at least 32 million internally displaced. ![]() Some are abducted, threatened, coerced or manipulated by armed actors. Recent estimates put the number of people displaced by organised violence at 60 million (UNHCR, 2015). Many, especially girls, are also subjected to gender-based violence.Ĭhildren become part of an armed force or group for various reasons. Warring parties use children not only as fighters, but as scouts, cooks, porters, guards, messengers and more. Often referred to as “child soldiers,” these boys and girls suffer extensive forms of exploitation and abuse that are not fully captured by that term. UNAMA publishes its findings and recommendations to the Government in reports jointly produced every two years with the UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights.Thousands of children are recruited and used in armed conflicts across the world. Between 20, more than 105,000 children were verified as recruited and used by parties to conflict, although the actual number of cases is believed to be much higher. The detention of children for their actual or alleged association with parties to conflict once again presented a somber figure, with at least 2,864 children deprived of libertymaking them. Since 2011 UNAMA has focused its monitoring and advocacy on the treatment of those arrested on suspicion of having committed offences related to the ongoing armed conflict. ![]() UNAMA carries out its detention observation with the full support of the Government (including being granted unhindered access to detention facilities) and in a spirit of cooperation and support. This webinar will focus on a discussion on the legal frameworks for CAAFAG. Interpretation will be provided in French, Spanish and Arabic.
